Support for Young Children Who Stutter

If you think your young child is stuttering, you undoubtedly have many questions. We are here as a resource for you as you navigate the process of finding out more about stuttering. Our support includes helping you learn what stuttering is, what it isn’t, what is involved in diagnosis and treatment of stuttering in young children and how you can best help your child. We provide one on one support from a speech-pathologist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of stuttering, from people who stutter and from other parents who have shared your concern. Support groups are available as well.

Support for School Aged Children Who Stutter

School-aged children who stutter benefit from the support they receive from other children and teens who stutter. We offer one-on-one and quarterly support programs for school-aged children (kindergarten through 5th grade). We continue to be overwhelmed by how meaningful it is for school-aged children to meet with other students who also stutter. Learning you are not the only person living with the challenges of stuttering can be life changing.

Teen Stuttering Support

This is a support group for local teens who stutter. We meet on the first Wednesday of every month from 5:00-6:30 pm in Palm Beach Gardens. There is no cost to join. Liz Blake SLP facilitates the group, but it is driven mainly by the Teen Coordinator. This is a judgment-free time to share frustrations, strategies, and self-advocacy techniques with other teens who stutter. You are never required to speak at the meeting. Everyone can participate at their comfort level. It is not all serious. There are lots of laughs and friendships made. If interested, please fill out the contact form, and we will email you the details.

"I would recommend these meetings to anyone with a stutter themselves or to anyone that knows someone who stutters, regardless of age. “

“At a support group meeting you can talk about A LOT!  But not only about stuttering.  It is more difficult to talk to other people because they don’t’ stutter.  Talking with others who stutter makes it so much easier to just TALK”

"Seeing other people in various phases of their life and seeing how they deal with their disfluency and what they have been able to accomplish with their disfluency because personally I had the limiting belief that my stutter would hold me back in doing what I wanted in life."

Parent Support

As a parent of a child or teen who stutters, we continue to learn how important it is for you to have the best information available to support your child through this stuttering journey. We offer one on one as well as quarterly support programs for parents of children who stutter. Meetings are offered virtually or in person. The more you know about stuttering, the more you can help your

child.

"I encourage parents to invest time in supporting your child who stutters.  Take the time to bring them to a support group, a conference, a one-day event.  It will build their confidence. Most importantly, accept them for who they are.  They are perfect!"
-mom whose son is a person who stutters
“My son is now in college and did not want to report his stutter to the Disability Department.  Rather, he decided to advocate for himself and tell people he stutters.  A proud moment! "
-mom whose son is a person who stutters
"Support from other parents of kids who stutter is great because you learn from others in similar situations.  Like the kids, you learn that you are not alone."
"Listen to your kids' fears, offer extra support. Be aware of your own signs of frustration and fear that may actually make this that much harder for your child ."
 - mom whose daughter is a person who stutters
“What I wish I knew at the beginning was that my child was going to be OK. Stuttering does not define his life.  Overcoming it does not mean the stutter will go away but means he is comfortable with who he is and what to do to help with his stuttering.  Speaking for a child who stutters only erodes their confidence.”

Adults Who Stutter

If you are an adult who stutters or know someone who is, we can help you find resources locally and nationally to help you with your stuttering journey. Support groups for adults meet virtually

as well as in person.

Professionals and Stuttering Support

We continue to receive requests from speech-language pathologists to learn more about stuttering. We offer opportunities for students in speech-language pathology and licensed professionals to meet one-on-one or in small groups with teens, parents, and adults who stutter. These support group meetings allow the professionals to ask questions, learn more about best practices and be ready to support people who stutter in the future.
